Most questions asked by children can be answered by referring to points covered in the program. The following are the most common questions, with appropriate responses:
Should I use a brighter colored bag?
If you have a bright colored bag that's great! Use it. But if you don't, use the kind you probably already have in your garage or kitchen.
What about the orange bags they use along the highway?
Many of these bags are very large and very thick. It's too big to fit in your pocket, but if you use one of these make sure you prepare a hole for your nose and eyes before you go camping. It is
almost impossible to poke a hole in them with your finger.
Should I climb a tree so I can see better?
No! You might fall and get hurt. Also the searchers will be looking for you on the ground, not up in a tree.
What if I see a snake?
If you see it some distance away, back away and stay away. If you suddenly see it and it is quite close, stop and hold still until it goes away. Never play with a snake or try to poke it with
anything.
Should I carry matches to start a fire so I can keep warm?
No! If you do everything we tell you, you won't be lost long enough to need one. Your trash bag will keep you warm. Starting a fire can be very dangerous, especially with the dry areas we have here.
The fire could easily get out of control.
What about lightning?
Lightning usually strikes the tallest object. Try not to be the tallest thing around. Don't pick the tallest tree to hug or the only tree in a clear area.
Should I eat some plants or berries if I get hungry?
No! They might make you very sick. If you just remember to Hug-A-Tree you won't be lost long enough to worry about getting hungry. We'll bring you food and water. You don't need to look for it.
For questions regarding local wild animals
Stress that animals are afraid of humans. Blow your whistle and yell at it and it will run away to protect itself.
When lost in a shopping center, should I go with a person offering help?
No! Only go with someone that you know, or someone in uniform such as Mall Security or a Police
Officer.
Is is okay to "chat" on-line with an unknown person?
Chatting on-line is okay, but you should never agree to meet anyone that you do not know. If they want to meet you, then
have them meet you and your parents. If they don't want to meet your parents, then stay away from them.
What should I do if a stranger grabs me?
SCREAM as loud as you can. It doesn't matter what you scream as long as it is loud enough for everyone to hear. Do not listen to any threats that are made, just SCREAM!
What if someone comes for me because my Mom or Dad are injured?
Unless it is someone you know, do not go with them. Your parents are not going to send someone that you don't
know to get you. If there is an accident, the Police will notify you.
